Katie’s Restaurant & Bar: A Mid-City Family-Owned Favorite

Just one block away from the B&B is one of our favorite places to dine… and we hope it will be one of yours as well. Katie’s Restaurant and Bar has been a fixture in Mid-City since 1984.

Katie’s was opened as a lunch-only restaurant by Mr. Leo Leininger, and run by the Leininger family until 1994 when they passed the baton to the Craig family. The Craigs expanded the establishment into a full-service restaurant and bar. Scot Craig, along with his brother David, ran the kitchen, and their mother Mary worked as the hostess… and the restaurant thrived.

Katie’s hit a rough patch in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina, and then looters, all but destroyed the restaurant. But the Craigs persevered: over the next 5 years, Scot worked to restore and reopen the eatery, and in 2010 a new restaurant opened under that old, respected, neighborhood name. From there, Scot took on a parter: Katherine D’Aquin was a former server & bartender who returned from a six-year stint in New York to help bring Katie’s back to its former glory as a beloved neighborhood restaurant serving delicious food and family atmosphere. You’ll still see Mary greeting guests, Scot in the kitchen, and now Katherine working in the dining room and bar. And as the family expands, so does the set of familiar faces you can see at Katie’s.

Katie’s serves a mix of traditional New Orleans fare, mixed with… well, a little bit of everything really. Besides Po’ Boys and Muffaletta on the sandwich menu, you’ll also see a full selection of burgers and chicken sandwich options. Entrees range from traditional New Orleans seafood offerings to Italian dishes, and even ribs. And let’s not forget the delicious pizzas that come from their Brooklyn-style stone pizza oven! Sunday brunch features a full range of traditional breakfast favorites, and an abbreviated lunch menu. No matter what you’re craving, chances are good that Katie’s has it on the menu.

Katie’s Restaurant and Bar is located just northeast of the inn at the corner of Iberville and S. Telemachus Streets: a 3-minute walk (0.1 mile) from our front door. We highly recommend you give them a try when you choose Canal Street Inn as your NOLA lodging destination.
